Robert Valentini, M.S. Ph.D., M.D.

Bob is a Compass Strategies consultant specializing in the life sciences.

Bob possesses years of experience as a senior life science executive. As the co-founder and chief executive officer of two biotechnology companies, Bob was involved in all aspects of management to include capital formation, licensing and product development.

He successfully negotiated a term sheet resulting in $11M financing from an international venture capital syndicate and led NIH and NSF SBIR funding efforts. Bob spearheaded business development and in-licensing activities with numerous biotechnology companies (Austrianova, Chiron, Fibrogen, Genzyme, Maxcyte, TKT) and academic institutions (Brown University, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center, University of Leuven, University of Milan, Stanford University). He has also successfully managed the acquisition of target companies.

Bob served as a program executive with Shire Phamaceuticals, where he held overall strategic responsibility for Replagal, a $100M enzyme replacement therapy approved in 34 countries and Hunter-CNS, a pre-clinical program focused on brain and spinal cord disease. He was a member of Shire's Development Steering Committee, Clinical Protocol Review Board, Publication Review Committee and Program Stage Committee.

Bob also served as an assistant professor of medical science and orthopedics at Brown University's Department of Molecular Pharmacology & Biotechnology. In 1997, he was named Manning Assistant Professor (endowed chair).

Bob held dual appointments at Brown University (Medical Science) and Rhode Island Hospital (Orthopedics) and was the director of Brown's Tissue Engineering Consortium, a network of basic and clinical science departments including Orthopedics, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Plastic Surgery, Vascular Surgery and Infectious Disease.

Bob holds 7 issued U.S. patents and has 7 pending US patent applications. He has been published in 20 peer-review publications and is the co-author of a book on Biomaterials, Tissue Engineering and Drug Delivery.

Bob earned a B.S. in biology, a M.S. in medical science, a Ph.D. in medical science and an M.D. from Brown University.

He resides in the Boston/Providence area.
